The Asiatic hornet

At the Ferme des Tuileries, which is a short bike ride along the Lot at Fongrave, Celine and her family have a farm shop.

Suspended from the rafters in the barn next to the shop are the spectacular constructions of the invasive Asiatic hornet.

These abandoned nests were found near the farm, high up in the trees. They were removed in the autumn, when the worker hornets are dead.

The nests are made of bark paper and can reach a length of one metre and a diameter of 80 cm. Inside there are numerous honeycombed, horizontal chambers.

Apparently, Asian hornets are bad news for European honey bees, and hence crop pollination.

The farm shop has created an educative series of plastic sealed A4 sheets hanging near the nests.

The nests are a rather unsettling, baleful presence above your head.

I'd hate to tangle with a swarm of Asiatic hornets.

  1. Thanks to you, I googled frelon asiatique and learned a lot about that awful pest. There was a video where they inject pesticides inside the asiatic hornet's nest with the help of a drone! On n'arrête pas le progrès.

    1. Drones are starting to make nests and have been seen flying out in swarms.
