Lalandi pines ... before and after

We got a team of tree-fellers in to cut down a patch of 80 year old Lalandi pines obscuring the view of the valley.

It's made the world of difference.

The change has opened up the vista and created a whole new feel for Ellesmere's garden.

It's let light and air through to our other trees and given us a true sense of being on a hilltop.

The early morning sun now comes streaming in, bathing the south side of the house.

We plan to engage the same team next year to fell the remaining Lalandi on the eastern side of the house.

  1. And the view is spectacular. So happy that it worked out ok. Now you can see the sangliers coming.

  2. You bet Kerrie! I've used branches and logs to create a barrier to the boar around the south-eastern perimeter after I noticed tracks and a bit of digging. Fingers crossed!

    1. You have to protect your patch of artichokes and saffron

  3. Bonjour Tony. Eh! bien, ça, c'est une entreprise considérable et vous allez avoir du bois de chauffage pour un bout de temps.
I could not find Lalandi Pines, but I found Leyland Pines and thanks to you I read the fascinating story of the Leyland Cypress on the Wikipedia page :
    https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Leyland_cypress
I think Lalandi and Leyland are the same thing. So, I think your trees are Cupressus × leylandii.
Now, whichever way you turn you have a great view.
I love your raised-bed jardin potager.
Now, I am mystified by photo #6. A very interesting illusion d'optique happened. I saw a bright panicle of white flowers coming from the yucca- or sago palm-looking plant in the right bottom corner of the photo next to the last. It was just the bright sun on the stones of the house!

    1. In photo # 4, did these two extraterrestrials speak English?

    2. They did! They said, "Take me to your leader". I said, "Sorry, Cliona's out shopping!"
Thanks for correcting my lazy spelling of those pesky pines ... they are indeed Leylandii. They're a bloddy menace! I'm going to have three huge bonfires this Christmas.
The white flowers coming from the sago palm are actually new leaves shooting as a cluster in the centre of the plant. As usual, Charles-Henry, it was great to hear from you. I do hope you are keeping well.

    3. Yes, Tony. There is a little improvement but I'm still bedridden as I have been for the last fifteen months. Take care yourself and enjoy life with extraterrestrials!
